Statue Of Christian Football Player Tim Tebow Causes Controversy
04.20.11 |
Christian football player Tim Tebow is making headlines again this morning-- this time, for a statue in his honor that bears a bible verse.
The 23-year-old University of Florida quarterback is best known for wearing the verse John 3:16 in his eye black during the 2009 BCS Championship Game. Within 2 days, 94 million people googled his name, trying to find out what the words under his eyes meant. Now, he's the subject of controversy again, because a statue in his likeness has been set up outside his old stadium, and it bears the same verse under his eyes. Over a hundred comments have already been posted on the university's webpage. Some detractors say, quote "it is shameful for the university to support any one religion, and I question the legality." Supporters wrote "I'm not a Christian, but the Bible reference doesn't bother me a bit. Tim Tebow stood up for what he believed, that's admirable. I'm glad UF had the guts to allow the artist to depict Tebow realistically." For now, the university says, the statue stays. If you want to see the statue, go here.
