Sixteen Injured In World Cup Stampede

Sixteen people were injured Sunday when fans rushed a free World Cup warmup game between Nigeria and North Korea in South Africa. The BBC says the push occurred when a crowd greater than the stadium's 10-thousand-person capacity reached the venue in suburban Johannesburg. Two police officers were among the injured, one seriously. Local authorities closed the gates after the first crush, then re-opened them after awhile. A second surge then took place.

FIFA [[ FEE-fah ]], the international soccer organization, said in a statement it had no part in ticketing for the game. The game was also delayed five minutes when a railing inside the stadium collapsed. The facility will not be used for the World Cup, which starts Friday. The game was still played, with Nigeria coming out on top 3 to 1.
