Senator Schumer Defends Wellsburg

Last week, WETM told you FEMA announced it would finally give Wellsburg $1.4 million to relocate and rebuild the fire department that was ruined in the 2011 Tropical Storm Lee flooding. Mayor Malcolm Coles says that number was almost a million dollars less than the $2.3 million that FEMA originally committed to providing a year ago. Thursday, Schumer says a lot of the difference is due to flood insurance that Wellsburg received. Because Wellsburg received and used insurance money, FEMA deducted that amount from what the agency originally said it would commit to. Mayor Coles says that the food insurance money may be equal to a $100 thousand deduction, not upwards of a half a million dollars.
