Senator Schumer Calls For Legislation Detailing Bird Strikes

Senator Chuck Schumer is calling for a new law to cut into the number of aircraft bird strikes. Senator Schumer plans to introduce legislation that would mandate that all airports detail records on all such incidents. Currently, airports voluntarily detail the information. The Federal Aviation Administration estimates 20-percent of such incidents are reported.

A bird strike brought about the near disaster of US Airways Flight 1549 this past January. The so-called "Miracle on the Hudson" flight took off from LaGuardia Airport before reporting double engine failure moments later after running into a flock of birds. The plane splashed down in the Hudson River.
