Illinois Democrats have joined their Republican counterparts in calling for a fresh investigation into U.S. Senator Roland Burris. Burris has made conflicting statements about fundraising for former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich before his appointment to Congress by Blagojevich.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate Ethics Committee will reportedly open a preliminary inquiry into the matter. Senator Barbara Boxer's communications director tells the "Chicago Sun-Times" that an inquiry is opened whenever allegations of improper conduct are brought to the attention of the Senate Ethics Committee.  Boxer chairs the ethics panel.

Previously, Burris said he turned down a request by the ex-governor's brother, Robert Blagojevich, to raise political cash for the governor. Monday night, Burris admitted he tried to raise money for Blagojevich while he was being considered for the Senate appointment.
