Sebelius Confirmation Vote Today

The U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote today on the confirmation of Governor Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. The nomination was delayed amid opposition from some Republicans including GOP national Committee Chairman Michael Steele, who last week called on the president to withdraw the nomination unless Sebelius answered more questions about abortion.

Supporters are now arguing the swine flu outbreak has made it important to confirm her quickly. On Monday, the Service Employees International Union began circulating a petition urging a speedy confirmation because of the outbreak. Health and Human Services has nearly two dozen top positions unfilled.
