Same Sex Marriages Put On Hold In Pennsylvania

A Pennsylvania judge has ordered a suburban Philadelphia court clerk to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.  The decision leaves their legal status unclear, with an appeal possible and other legal actions pending or in the works. Montgomery County Register of Wills D. Bruce Hanes says he was  disappointed but would comply with the decision by Commonwealth Court Judge Dan Pellegrini. Hanes handed out 174 licenses illegally.  Pennsylvania’s Defense of Marriage Act dictates that the only recognized unions in the Commonwealth are those between a man and a woman. Pennsylvania is the only northeastern state that does not grant legal status to marriage or civil unions between individuals of the same sex.
