Same Sex Marriage Bill On Agenda Today In Ny
06.24.09 |
Another chaotic scene is expected to play out today in Albany. New York Governor David Paterson is calling for another special session and adding a gay marriage bill to the agenda. The governor is seeking a vote on the controversial item in response to Tuesday's messy special session, which dealt with non-controversial items, such as mayoral control of the city's public schools. Senate Democrats surprised Albany onlookers in locking themselves inside the the Senate chamber for a time until eventually opening the doors for Republican lawmakers.
The governor's decision to seek a vote on a same-sex marriage bill has reportedly angered Bronx state Senator Ruben Diaz, Senior. Diaz is reportedly considering siding with colleague, Senator Pedro Espada, Junior, in caucusing with Republicans and putting the GOP in control of the Senate. Meanwhile, a new Quinnipiac University poll shows public option on same-sex marriage is shifting and for the first time most New Yorkers support gay marriage. The numbers show the momentum has swung in favor of gay nuptials 51-41 percent.
