The stage is set for the start of Operation New Dawn in Iraq on September 1st.  Retired Army Major General Vincent Boles says with fewer than 50-thousand U.S troops remaining on the ground, Iraqi leaders now have to assume greater responsibility for their country's future.

U.S. forces will be used primarily in advising, training and assisting the Iraqi Security Forces until the total withdrawal in December 2011. However, Boles says he can forsee a need for an extensive "advise and assist presence" in Iraq and Afghanistan for decades to come.  More than 44-hundred U.S. soldiers have been killed since the start of the 2003 invasion that ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
