Report Many Middle Aged Women Fighting Losing Battle With Weight
03.24.10 |
A healthy middle-aged woman in America needs a full hour of moderate exercise every day to avoid gaining weight as she ages. That's the unwelcome news published in the "Journal of the American Medical Association" on Tuesday. For many women that isn't possible because of time constraints. Some say between work and families an hour for exercise just isn't in the cards. For others seven hours of exercise each week is a physical impossibility.
Experts with the Institute of Medicine are recommending national policy changes to help Americans exercise more. They suggest creation of bicycle paths in communities among other things. First Lady Michelle Obama has taken on childhood obesity as a cause and some say it could take a similar push in adults to help them avoid the health issues that come with excess weight ranging from heart attacks to diabetes. Two-thirds of U.S. adults and nearly one in three children in the U.S. are considered overweight or obese.
