Report Gmail To Be More Like Social Networking Site

It looks as though Google may be taking a page from the social networking playbook. The "Wall Street Journal" is reporting that the Internet search giant plans to change its e-mail service so users can easily post status updates on Gmail. The move is seen as a way for Google to capitalize on a trend made popular by sites like Twitter and Facebook. The latter is increasingly being seen as a Google competitor, as more and more people are bypassing Google by using the Bing search engine offered on Facebook. Yahoo and AOL have already taken steps to give their e-mail services more of a social networking feel. An announcement from Google is expected sometime this week, possibly as early as Tuesday.
