President Karzai Delays Cabinet Announcement

Afghanistan's president has postponed announcing the members of his new cabinet until Saturday. A palace spokesman says the delay will allow Hamid Karzai extra time to finalize his list and sort out his candidates for two ministries. Karzai was inaugurated last month for a second full term after winning a re-election in August. He had said he would provide a list of ministers to parliament by today.

Afghanistan's leader since the ouster of the Taliban in 2001, Karzai is under intense pressure from the West to keep technocrats in important positions. However, he may also need to offer posts to former guerrilla chiefs and their allies who supported his re-election. Candidates will have to be approved by parliament, a process which could take several weeks.
