Possible Discovery Of Planet In Another Galaxy

A team of astronomers at the University of Zurich in Switzerland believe they've discovered a new planet.  However, it isn't in the Milky Way galaxy, but in the neighboring Andromeda galaxy some two-million light-years away.  The discovery would make it the first planet found outside of the Milky Way.  The astronomers used a method called gravitational microlensing.  The team built a computer model to determine how large planets would affect the light from stars in Andromeda.  Team leader Philippe Jetzer first thought it was a binary star, however the results appear more like his extra-galactic planet model predicted for a planet up to seven times the size of Jupiter.  The research is published in the magazine "New Scientist."
