Pope Benedict will make a stop at Jerusalem's memorial to Holocaust victims during a May trip to the Holy Land. The visit to the Holocaust memorial comes amid controversy over the Pope's decision to lift the excommunication of a bishop who has denied the Holocaust.

He has announced he will visit Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories. Benedict said he will make a pilgrimage to ask for the "precious gift of unity and peace for the Middle East and all humanity."

His trip will be the first papal visit to the Holy Land since the year 2000, when Pope John Paul the Second traveled there. At the time he asked at Jerusalem's Western Wall for forgiveness for offenses by Christians against Jews.
