A new Gallup poll indicates Republicans may fare better than Democratic candidates in the 2010 U.S. House elections. Registered voters surveyed had a 48-percent to 44-percent preference for Republicans over Democratic contenders if those elections were held today. That's a rise of four percentage points in Republican preference since July.

Gallup says independent voters are a big reason for this change as they now favor Republican candidates by 22 percentage points over Democrats. Independent voters also were a major factor in last week's elections of Republican governors in New Jersey and Virginia. Gallup says these early indications point to Republicans being well-positioned to gain back some of the congressional seats their party lost in 2006 and 2008.
