Philadelphia Transit Strike Continues

A strike involving the Philadelphia transit system's largest union entered its second day today. The strike began early Tuesday after The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, or SEPTA, failed to reach an agreement on contract negotiations with Transport Workers Union Local 234. SEPTA averages more than 928-thousand trips every weekday in the city. The strike has affected tens of thousands of Philadelphia children. An estimated 78-thousand public-school students normally take SEPTA, along with more than 20-thousand charter-, parochial- and private-school students. The Philadelphia School District says absences during the strike will not count against students' attendance records, as long as school administrators receive a note from a parent or guardian. District officials are encouraging parents to send their children to public libraries if they miss school.
