Pa State Workers To Start Getting Paid

(Harrisburg, PA)  --  Thousands of state workers in Pennsylvania are expected to get their paychecks next week.  Governor Ed Rendell will sign an austerity budget bill this morning authorizing spending for state workers.  But the battle to pass a final budget wages on and schools, county governments and hospitals are forced to operate without state funding.

Democrats and Republicans remain two-billion-dollars apart when it comes to spending.  Some lawmakers say even the austerity budget does not meet the state's constitutional requirement of having a balanced budget, although Governor Rendell says he plans to bring balance by using his line-item veto to slash spending.

When the budget does pass, it may come with the elimination of anywhere between 300 and 800 state jobs.
