Pa Gov Wants To Pay For Roads Bridges By Taxing Gas Stations

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett is about to unveil a massive transportation overhaul plan that relies mostly on 2 billion dollars a year in taxes on gas stations. Corbett's office says he will unveil details next week. The centerpiece of the plan would involved removing a cap on the oil company franchise tax, and that would require approval from the state legislature. The cash would be used to address a backlog of road and bridge repairs and help support the cash strapped mass transit systems. Supporters say any aid to fix roads and bridges is critical; opponents fear any taxes on gas stations will be pass down to everyone who purchases gasoline.
