Obama To Host Dalai Lama Today

Despite protests by China, President Obama will host a meeting with the Dalai Lama today. It will be the first meeting between President Obama and the Buddhist icon. China is incensed about warm U.S. relations with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader. There are already growing tensions between the U.S. and China over trade, currency and U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said a "mature relationship between two countries allows you to do things" in areas of mutual interest. Gibbs said China has known about the planned meeting for some time. The Dalai Lama was awarded the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal in 2008. President Obama and the Dalai Lama were supposed to get together when the Dalai Lama visited Washington, DC in October 2009, but Obama chose to postpone the meeting until after a November summit with Chinese leader Hu.
