Unusually heavy post-holiday web traffic is to blame for crashing New York State's computerized unemployment system. The state Labor Department's phone bank began to periodically shut down Monday afternoon. The problems then spread to the department's website, which was down yesterday for several hours.

As many as ten thousand people an hour attempted to log into the system to file new unemployment claims or check on existing claims. The system is back on-line.

Over thirty thousand New Yorkers have filed for unemployment benefits as of last week, a thirty-two percent spike over this time a year ago. The state unemployment rate is now 6.1 percent.
