New York State's police force has a different solution: use retired officers to protect kids. There's a statewide movement amoung county sheriffs, and it's gaining traction. Steuben, Chemung and Schuyler sheriffs say it would cost little to hire retired officers to protect schools. It would be paid for by two federal grants, and older officers with decades of shooting experience could make as much as 25-thousand dollars a year for a part time position. They say it's much more expensive to arm and train teachers.
