Ny Governor Paterson Introduces Same Sex Marriage Bill

New York Governor David Paterson defined marriage equality as a civil right as he introduced a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in New York state. A similar bill passed the Assembly in 2007, but never made it out of the then-Republican-controlled state Senate.

Political analysts say a same-sex marriage bill could still run into trouble in the state Senate. Majority Leader Malcolm Smith says he'd like to wait to secure the 32 votes needed for passage before putting such a bill on the floor. The states of Iowa and Vermont recently legalized same-sex marriage.
