Ny Dec Chief Says His Staffs Studies Are Sufficient For High Volume Hydrofracking

The chief of the Department of Environmental Conservation in New York state angered high volume hydrofracking opponents yesterday when he said there wouldn't be an outside study of the dangers of gas drilling in New York. Joe Martens is the state's top enviromental regulator, the man who will announce whether or not gas drilling will be allowed in New York. Late Thursday, he issued a lengthy statement-- Saying he's using the department of health and the D.E.C. team-- only-- to do an analysis on the effects of hydraulic fracturing. But drilling opponents want a non-government study done, too. Martens, in a statement, said "I reject that demand." He also said he expects lawsuits to be filed if the state does allow drilling.
