New York State Senate Approves No Fault Divorce

New York has moved a step closer to adopting a no-fault divorce. As it stands now, the Empire State is the only state in the nation that does not allow for a no-fault divorce. Couples must assign blame for the failure of a marriage under current law, through adultery, abandonment, or remain legally separated for a year. However, a new bill passed in the state Senate would grant couples a divorce after a separation of six months or more and after all financial and custody issues have been resolved. The measure now moves on to the state Assembly.
