New York State Employees Could Avoid Layoffs

It appears the Paterson administration and top union leaders are playing "Let's Make a Deal" over proposed work force reductions and pensions. The "Times Union" reports a deal to avoid 87-hundred layoffs called for by Paterson is near.

Instead of pink slips, workers would be offered 20-thousand dollar buyouts to leave the workforce voluntarily. In exchange, unions would back Paterson's call for a new pension tier, under which there would by heavier employee contributions and an increase in the minimum retirement age.
