The new Kepler space telescope that launched back in March is already producing new data for researchers. Kepler has detected the atmosphere on a known giant gas planet which proves the observatory's instruments are working properly. Astrophysicist Alan Boss from the Carnegie Institution says the checkout is significant because it means Kepler can start its primary mission of looking for planets that are just like Earth. Boss says one day in the not-too-distant future you may be able to look up in the night sky and point to stars that we know are orbited by planets similar to our own.
