More Than 16 Hundred Companies Have Mass Layoffs In July

(Washington, DC)  --  More than 16-hundred companies in the U.S. held mass layoffs in the month of July.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers show that resulted in more than 143-thousand people losing their jobs.  Mass layoffs involve dismissing at least 50 people from a single employer.

Despite the high number of companies laying off workers, it was dozens less than the month of June.  Manufacturing accounted for a fourth of the mass layoffs last month.  Since December of 2007, there have been more than 63-thousand such events in the U.S.
