Millions Of Christians Observe Maundy Thursday

04.21.11 | Sarah Harnisch

Christians around the world are observing Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday, which is the Thursday before Easter. This is believed to be the day in the life of Christ that he celebrated Passover with his disciples, sharing the Last Supper. During those days it was customary for a servant to wash the feet of guests as they arrived, and on this occasion Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. The word "Maundy" is derived from the Latin word for "command," which is mandatum.  The word refers to the command Jesus gave his disciples at the Last Supper that they should love one another.
