Mcchrystal Iran Training Furnishing Weapons For Afghan Insurgents

(Kabul)  --  General Stanley McChrystal says insurgents in Afghanistan are being trained in Iran and are being given weapons to fight U.S. and NATO troops.  McCrystal said evidence shows the training is being conducted inside Iran and that captured weapons come from Iran.  He added that coalition troops are working to stop the Islamic Republic from being involved in the nearly nine-year Afghan war, but he did not elaborate on what is being done.

McCrystal's comments come more than two months after Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said Iranian arms were being shipped to insurgents in the southern province of Kandahar.  NATO troops have an offensive planned this summer in Kandahar, a longtime Taliban stronghold.  Officials in Tehran deny involvement in the war, saying it is in the country's best interest to have a secure neighboring country.

Meanwhile in northern Iraq, shelling from inside Iran over the weekend has killed a 14-year-old Iraqi girl.  The shells fell in targeted villages where Kurdish rebels were believed to be operating.  The artillery barrage from Iran has continued over the past week.
