Libraries Celebrate National Bookmobile Day

Today is National Bookmobile Day. Events will be held at libraries across the U.S. in honor of the first annual celebration of America's mobile reading rooms as part of National Library Week. For more than a century, bookmobiles have been hitting the road to bring a wide array of library services to people who may not have access to a library building. These libraries on wheels can often be spotted visiting schools, senior centers, adult education programs, correctional facilities and rural communities. While they still offer books, they also serve as a place where people can check out CDs, attend workshops and use a computer. Many traditional bookmobiles are also getting help from online "cybermobiles." National Bookmobile Day is sponsored by the American Library Association, the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services, and the Association for Rural and Small Libraries.
