Researchers have produced monkeys using genetic material from two different mothers.  Scientist Jan Smeitink calls it a breakthrough of great importance, while some scientists hail the research as something that could help many families rid themselves of terrible disorders caused by defects in genetic material.

Others raise ethical, moral, and legal issues, saying the procedure could bring questions about the creation of offspring with DNA from two mothers and a father.  David Magnus, director of Stanford University's Center for Biomedical Ethics, says the work creates the potential for legal and social conflicts, because of the potential of a person having three genetic parents

The research was published Wednesday in the journal "Nature."
