Kids Start Skipping School In Kindergarten Study Shows

When do kids start choosing to miss school? Rochester, New York did a study, and they learned it's as early as kindergarten. The city has the lowest attendance rate in the state; some 4-thousand kids a year miss classes. District officials say they have been watching who's gone missing. One school spokesman says "there are just some families who don't recognize that kindergarten attendance is important. It lays the groundwork for reading and math and writing. What they learn in kindergarten truly does affect the rest of their academic life." The town is working on a bill that would make kindergarten mandatory. Teachers will be able to contact child protective services if the kids don't show up.
