John Deere Mansion Up For Bids Today
01.05.10 |
The Illinois mansion and former home to Deere & Company founder John Deere goes on the auction block today in Moline, Illinois. WQAD-TV reports the once-glorious 19th century mansion will be sold off as part of a foreclosure. Deere lived in the house during the 1880s and the landmark is due to be renovated.
Cheryle Colmark and her husband Roger bought the property for 100-dollars in 1996, with the dream of turning it into an elegant bed and breakfast. Cheryle Colmark says their dream turned into a nightmare after they sunk more than two-million-dollars into the project. After decades of disrepair, the Colmarks needed less than a year to finish renovations. But numerous delays, legal battles and financial problems curtailed the project's completion. Foreclosure brought the project to a standstill last June, and she says she hopes someone will buy the mansion, finish it and open it up to the public.
