Jobless Benefits In Pa Running Out For Unemployed

05.15.09 | Terry Diener

Tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians may be nearing the end of their unemployment benefits. Figures released Thursday by the state Department of Labor and Industry show that more than 43,000 people have received their final payment from a maximum of 33 weeks of additional federal benefits. Those benefits are on top of 26 weeks provided by the state.

All that remains after that is a maximum of 13 weeks of state-extended benefits, mostly funded by the federal government. The number of jobless claims is surging with the recession. About 350,000 people are receiving benefits from Pennsylvania, twice the number a year ago.

Meanwhile, just over 36,000 people filed claims last week. Pennsylvania's unemployment rose to 7.8 percent in March from 4.4 percent when the recession began in December 2007.
