(Kabul)  --  Iran is now admitting it is helping Afghanistan financially.  The Islamic Republic originally denied accounts stating Afghanistan had received "bags of money" from Iran.  Afghan President Hamid Karzai has stated his nation has received money from "friendly countries," including hundreds of thousands of dollars in the form of euros once or twice a year from Iran.

Iran's semi-official news agency first called reports of the cash assistance "baseless rumors," but now a Foreign Ministry spokesman says Iran has been involved in the reconstruction efforts for some time.  The spokesman stated the assistance will continue.

A report in "The New York Times" cited an Afghan official in reporting the money from Iran is an effort to buy power in Afghanistan.
