International Womens Day Celebrated Today
03.08.10 |
Today is International Women's Day, the 101st observance of an event first held in 1909 to campaign for better pay and voting rights for women. The global event is now primarily aimed at celebrating women's achievements and inspiring women around the world. Since 1975, the celebration has been sponsored by the United Nations. Here in the U.S., March is designated as Women's History Month. Often, the day is marked with calls to end oppression against women.
In China, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Vietnam, among others, International Women's Day is marked by men honoring their wives, mothers, friends and colleagues with flowers and gifts. It is the equivalent of Mother's Day here in the U.S. The International Women's Day website notes that women have made great strides during the 20th and 21st Centuries, becoming astronauts, CEOs and even prime ministers.
