There is a sign of encouragement for the nation's workers. The latest Department of Labor unemployment figures show initial filings for jobless benefits claims dropped by 34-thousand last week. It is the second straight weekly drop for that unemployment measure, although the overall labor market remains anemic.

For the week ending April 25th, the number of people staying on the jobless benefits roll increased by 56-thousand to more than six-point-three-million, pushing the insured unemployment rate up to four-point-eight percent. Continued jobless claims have reached new record highs for 14 consecutive weeks.
