Holiday Shoppers Hold Out For Discounts
12.17.09 |
Shoppers have been holding out more than ever for last-second deals this holiday season and they're likely to be rewarded. Scores of retailers are offering some discounts of 20-to-40-percent. That's less than last year's drastic price cuts of 60-percent when retailers were caught off-guard by the recession. But it's still not the recovery retailers had expected. A "USA Today"/Gallup poll found that 42-percent of Americans plan to spend even less this Christmas than last year. Another 47-percent plan to spend the same amount. A discount culture has also taken hold, with the poll finding that 62-percent of shoppers won't even look at an item unless it's marked down.
And just in case you stayed home on Black Friday and ignored Cyber Monday, there's now Free Shipping Day. Some 700 retailers as varied as Toys R Us and Nordstroms are offering free shipping if you place an online order today. The complete list of merchants is posted at FreeShipping.org.
