Hamas Leader Wants Truce
12.29.08 |
Exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal is reportedly ready to reinstate a truce with Israel in exchange for an end to the air strikes on the Gaza Strip. Former Israeli United Nations Ambassador Dan Gillerman says "victory" for Israel would be a ceasefire by Hamas.
More than 300 Palestinians have been killed in weekend strikes. Israel says the attacks are a response to rocket and mortar attacks that have been launched into the Jewish state from Gaza since Hamas called off a six-month ceasefire more than a week ago.
The president of Senegal says Meshaal would would only agree to the truce if Israel totally lifts a blockade on Gaza. Israel has not commented on the alleged proposal.
