Group Calls For Low Sodium Diet On Ny Roads

Environmentalists have a new focus: road salt. The Adirondack Council issued a report Monday saying road salt is causing "widespread" drinking water contamination and environmental damage.

The group points out that many Adirondack lakes are close to roads where salt is laid down four or five months out of the year, and some lakes have a layer of salt at their bottoms that harms fish.

The Adirondack Council believes "pre-icing" before major storms will reduce the use of road salt after storms. They also believe since state DOT crews are better trained and equipped to distribute road salt, they should take over some roads from local governments.
