Governor Patersons Gun Bill

Governor Paterson is proposing legislation to require more criminal background checks for gun dealers, their employees, and license holders. The bill would require gun shop employees who handle firearms to undergo National Instant Criminal Background checks.

Paterson says this would correct an inconsistency in state law that allows someone who is otherwise banned from possessing  guns to handle and sell  them as an employee.

The measure would also mandate firearm license holders to undergo criminal background checks when their licenses are renewed. Permanent license holders would have to get a background check every five years.
