The computer operating system landscape will be getting more crowded in the future. "USA Today" reports Google is putting together its own operating system for PCs, in what's viewed as directly throwing down the virtual gauntlet at Microsoft and its Windows operating system. Google's system will be aimed at netbooks, the low-cost, portable computers. The company indicates it'll be an "open source" project built with and by many developers. Google says it's the "natural extension" of Chrome, the Internet browser that company trotted out in 2008. Company vice president of Product Management, Sundar Pichai, said on the official Google blog that the Google Chrome OS will focus on speed, simplicity and security. Target date for the new operating system is the second half of next year.
