It is being described as one of the worst ice storms in twenty years in in New York.  The storm that struck last Friday left many residents without power. 134,000 people are still in the dark. 41 shelters were still open Sunday morning, although that number was down to 14 by Sunday night. Utilities say they won't have power restored to all customers until sometime Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Governor David Paterson has declared a State Disaster Emergency to help speed assistance to 16 counties affected by the ice storm.  Albany, Chenango, Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Otsego, Putnam, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Sullivan, Ulster, and Washington Counties are covered by the declaration.
