Food Stamp Use Is Up Nationally But Down In Pennsylvania

Food stamp participation across the United States has been surging since 2007-- 26 million Americans used it then, but the number more then doubled by 2012. Apparently though, Pennsylvania is bucking the trend. Involvement hasn't risen the last few years, and it's actually starting to drop off. Aid office workers say some people are getting jobs, others are turning to family instead.

Another factor playing into the lower enrollment is asset testing. As of last May, the state has been checking to see if paycheck stubs are accurate. They found 200-thousand people may not have been wholly truthful on their paperwork, and were trimmed from the food stamp payroll.
