(Indianapolis, IN)  --  The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of Eli Lilly's antidepressant drug Cymbalta for treating chronic pain.  The Indianapolis-based drugmaker said studies have shown Cymbalta works to help patients with chronic low back pain and other chronic pain due to osteoarthritis.  In a statement, the company said the exact way in which Cymbalta works to reduce the pain isn't known.  However, the company believes it's working by enhancing the body's, "natural pain-suppressing system by increasing the activity of serotonin" in the brain and spinal cord.  In addition to use as an antidepressant, the FDA has also approved Cymbalta for managing diabetic pain and fibromyalgia.
