The nighttime red and yellow colors illuminating the Empire State Building tonight and again tomorrow evening is drawing protesters to midtown New York. The iconic Manhattan landmark is recognizing the 60th anniversary of communist China. Dozens of Free Tibet demonstrators, waving the Tibetan flag and holding signs reading "Mao's Empire State Building," gathered at the base of the Fifth Avenue skyscraper. Queens Congressman Anthony Weiner denounces the lighting due to China's "shameful history on human rights." At a ceremony held Wednesday, China's consul-general called the dedication a great gesture.
