Driver In Yates County Amish Crash Charged

The driver that took the lives of 6 Amish in a van crash in Yates County has been charged. 42-year old Steven Eldridge of Penn Yann was officially charged Wednesday with 6 counts of criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving, and drunk driving. Investigators were waiting for him to be released from a Rochester psychiatric center before filing charges. A car driven by Eldridge passed a tractor on a curve and ran into the Amish van. 5 farmers were killed at the scene and a 6th died a week later. After his psychiatric evaluation, Eldridge was returned to the Yates County jail on 250 thousand dollar bond while he awaits grand jury action. All the crime lab analysis and accident reconstruction information has been compiled and it's sitting on the desk of the district attorney, ready for trial.
