Deadline Looms For New York Decs Hydrofracking Review

11.14.12 | Sarah Harnisch

With a key deadline just 16 days away on high volume hydrofracking in New York State, seven representatives from the Southern Tier went to Albany yesterday. Elmira Mayor Susan Skidmore and Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan were among those that traveled, and they met with DEC commissioner Joe Martens. Many mayors do support drilling, saying the benefits for farmers and homeowners far outweigh the few costs. If the DEC's review of drilling isn't completed by November 29th, state law will require it to open up the public comment period again. The last public comment period yielded 80-thousand comments for them to respond to.
