Church Could Lose Tax Exempt Status

It has been about two months since Americans United for the Separation of Church and State asked the IRS to investigate the pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas. "Christianity Today" says the request followed pastor Robert Jeffress' endorsement of presidential candidate Rick Perry on the church's website. Observers do not expect a quick response from the Internal Revenue Service. Senior policy analyst, Rob Boston, says, quote, "Right now the situation is in a holding pattern because the irs has found its internal policies under fire by federal court ruling." The Johnson Amendment of 1954 calls for churches to lose their tax exempt status if participate or intervene in a political campaign.
