Christian Counselors Could Be In Trouble In Ny State Eyes Gay Conversion Bill

The New York Senate’s only openly gay lawmaker wants to outlaw a "conversion therapy" for young people who are confused about their sexual orientation. Legislation introduced by senator Brad Hoylman would bar mental health providers from trying to change the sexual orientation of anyone under the age of 18. If enacted, any licensed mental health provider could be cited for unprofessional conduct and subject to licensing sanctions. Hoylman, who is married to a man and has a two-year-old adopted daughter, says the conversion therapy puts young people at risk.  Pro-family and religious groups say to ban it - is a violation of freedom of speech and makes the faulty assumption that people are born gay. California enacted a similar law last year but the measure is on hold while it’s being challenged in the courts.
